Abstract

This article examines the reflection of gender norms in South Korean media coverage of homicide cases. It focuses on “spousal insurance murders,” which refer to premeditated homicides committed for financial gain within marital relationships. The study explores the ways in which traditional gender roles shape media narratives. Specifically, it investigates how female offenders are represented in relation to violations of maternity norms and gender roles within families. A total of 1,194 newspaper articles published over the past decade, covering four such cases involving female offenders, were analyzed. Additionally, three comparable cases involving male offenders were studied as secondary references. The findings reveal that female offenders are portrayed not only as law breakers but also as moral deviants who betray social expectations of being a “good housewife.” The media highlights behaviors such as extramarital affairs, sham marriages, and excessive spending to frame these women as threats to social order. These portrayals serve as discursive tools that justify moral condemnation and reinforce patriarchal gender norms. This study empirically demonstrates that female offenders are subjected to dual stigmatization, both as criminals and as violators of gender norms, therebyhighlighting how offender’s gender influences media rhetoric in crime reporting.
