이 연구는 지난 30여 년간 언론보도에 나타난 ‘여성 범죄피해자에 대한 비난’에 관한 내용을 직접적으로 다룸으로써 피해자 비난과 책임공유의 논쟁이 어떻게 언론을 통하여 생성되는지를 밝혀내고자 하였다. 내용분석을 위하여 신문 3사의 여성대상 범죄보도 기사를 BIG KINDS의 지면검색 서비스를 이용하여 수집하고 피해자 비난 방법 등을 분석틀에 따라 코딩한 후 통계분석을 실시하였다. 연구의 주요 결론 및 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 보도량의 증가에 따라 2014년부터 피해자 비난의 내용들도 크게 증가하였는데 특히 간접적인 비난들이 많이 사용되었다. 둘째, 선행연구에서 나타난 바와 같이 피해자 비난으로 가해자에게는 동정적 표현과 변명의 요소들을, 피해자에게는 일탈성을 강조하는 표현들이 주로 사용되었는데 특히, 피해자의 신체, 정신, 재정적 문제가 범죄원인으로 제시되며, 가해자의 정보보다 많이 사용된다는 것을 확인하였다. 셋째, 어머니나 부인의 가출행위와 같은 가정 내 여성의 ‘부재’ 및 여성의 이혼요구, ‘남성’가해자의 부양의무 강조 등은 우리사회의 가부장 문화를 반영하는 반면 부정적인 가치체제나 시스템을 유지시키는 장치가 될 수 있다. 넷째, 살인범죄의 경우 다른 범죄보다 피해자 비난-배우자 및 연인 등 친밀한 관계에서에서 직․간접적인 피해자 비난-표현이 많이 사용되었으며 성범죄의 경우는 가해자가 타인인 경우 직․간접적인 피해자 비난이 많이 사용된 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 마지막으로 연구의 시사점과 한계를 제시하였다.
Abstract
This study intended to clarify how victim blaming can generate through media by directly dealing with details of “female victim blaming” appeared in media coverage for the last 30 years. For analysis of content, this study carried out a statistical analysis of articles published by three newspaper companies regarding murder, sex crimes, domestic violence and dating violence committed to women every three years from 1990 to 2017, after coding according to the analytic frame by paper search service of BIG KINDS of Korea Press Foundation. The key conclusions and implications of this research can be summarized as follows. Firstly, the proportion of report in terms of types of crimes constitutes in order of sex crimes, murder, domestic violence and dating violence. Moreover, it was confirmed that, since 2014, the content of female victim blaming started to increase. Secondly, the research results manifest that the rate of negative description of victims was higher than that of sympathetic depiction of perpetrators. Sympathetic expressions regarding the perpetrators emphasize their inevitable choice for committing crimes due to hardships of life and physical/mental health problems of victims. In addition, it was possible to confirm that the report coverage described the situation as if the responsibility of perpetrators decreased by highlighting their suicide and suicide attempts after committing crimes, and used words to justify the acts of perpetrators or make regard such acts as trivial ones. Negative description of victims allude to the fact that they deserved to be treated by such crimes by putting emphasis on their damage cause as a product of victims’ ignorance, insult and abuse or their deviation including extramarital affair, prostitution, inebriation and compensated dating. Thirdly, emphasis of “absence” such as runaway mothers or wives in the family, the divorce demands of women, and the emphasis on the duty of support of the ‘males’ perpetrators reflect the patriarchal social order. And it can also be a device for maintaining a negative value system. Fourthly, media coverage frequently uses direct and indirect victim blaming strategies of victims in order of murder, sex crime and violence. Moreover, in the murder, direct and indirect victim blaming tactics are frequently used in intimate partner relationships, and in the case of sex offenses, victim blaming tactics are frequently used when the perpetrator was a stranger. Lastly, the implications and limitations of the study were suggested.
