Abstract
The Catholic Church has long faced feminist critiques. Pope Francis has emphasized human rights and advocated for greater participation of women, potentially advancing gender equality within the Church. This article conducts a feminist discourse analysis of Catholic documents, newspapers, and websites to examine the Church’s discourse on sexuality and family, assessing its significance, limitations, and possible pathways toward achieving gender equality. The analysis shows that Pope Francis has granted priests the authority to absolve women who have undergone abortions and allowed remarried Catholics to participate in the sacraments. He has also extended blessings to cohabiting couples and same-sex couples. Despite these changes, the Church’s marriage-centered discourse still reinforces rigid gender roles. It promotes equitable spousal relationships but emphasizes chastity, condemns extramarital sex, opposes artificial reproductive interventions, and neglects education on preventing sexual violence, structurally rendering women vulnerable. Despite evolving family structures, the Church’s discourse continues to marginalize diverse forms of family and uphold traditional norms. Liberal theologians, feminist activists, and sexual minority groups within the Church actively challenge such discrimination. The emergence of resistant discourses holds the potential to contest and deconstruct Catholic teachings on gender equality.
