Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate conceptual organization in semantic memory using semantic priming paradigm in high functioning autistic children and their normal control children who were matched for age, sex, and IQ. The prime was a single word and the target task was completing a word fragment that was semantically related to the prime word. A word completion task was conducted using both pictures(picture-word) and words(word-word). The both groups showed semantic priming effects in both modality conditions. While on a word-word task, the autistic group showed significantly better performance than the control group, on a picture-word task two groups showed similar performance. The control group showed similar performance on both priming tasks, but the autistic group performed significantly better on a picture-word task than on a word-word task. These findings suggest the possible advantage of pictures over words in access to semantics in children with autism.
