Abstract
[Purpose] This study aims to investigate the effects of an emotion regulation program on the emotion regulation ability, social skills, and self-esteem of international middle school students, including those at risk of emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD). [Method] Participants were 11 dormitory-residing middle school students at A International School, with four students identified as at risk for EBD. The independent variable was an emotion regulation program designed to enhance emotional awareness and expression, conflict resolution, and goal-setting skills among international school adolescents. The program comprised 9 sessions, delivered twice a week for 40 minutes during the dormitory’s evening self-study periods. A single-group pretest–posttest design was employed. Paired-sample t-tests were conducted to examine pre- and posttest changes for all participants, and descriptive analyses were used to compare pretest, posttest, and follow-up scores for the EBD-risk subgroup. [Results] All participants showed an increase in emotion regulation ability with statistically significant improvements in total scores and the subscale of external emotion regulation. Also, all participants showed an increase in social skills with statistically significant improvements in total scores and the subscale of empathy. While most students at risk for EBD showed increase in total of emotion regulation and social skills from pre- to post-test, follow-up results varied across individuals. The changes in self-esteem were not statistically significant. Most students at risk of EBD showed improvement and maintenance in self-esteem scores, though the extent of change was limited. [Conclusion] This study is significant in that it expanded the key components and measurement domains applicable to future youth programs and proposed an emotion regulation program model that can be implemented in inclusive settings considering adolescents’ diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
