Abstract
The claim that morality may be justified by the theory of evolution is to be understood as three distinctive justification-claims. First, the claim is to be understood as the claim that the origin and the process of morality can be explained by the evolutionary theory, that is Darwinism. Second, the claim is to be understood as the justification-claim that our having moral practices or institutions are justified by Darwinism. Third, the claim can be understood as the claim that moral norms may be justified by evolutionary facts. The first claim is not justification-claim. It tries to substitute evolutionary explanation of morality for justification for morality. It is not evolutionary justification for morality, but evolutionary explanations of morality. The second type of argument was advanced by R. Campbell. According to his argument, since the evolutionary explanation for existence of morality implies that having some morality rather than none overwhelmingly improves the life prospects of everyone in the group, having some morality is justified. But although this kind of arguments may provide the reasons for our ancestors' having morality in their EEA(evolutionary environment of adaptation) in view of their genes, It doesn't provide reasons for our having morality in our EEA in view of individuals. The third kind of justification-claims is based on the prescriptive evolutionary ethics, which asserts that moral norms can be deduced from evolutionary facts. This type of argument was advanced by Robert Richards. According to his argument, a deductive relation holds between evolutionary propositions and moral propositions. Therefore, moral 'ought' may be derivable from evolutionary 'is'. But Richards' argument is inadequate, for there is a world of difference between moral 'ought' and predictive 'ought'. It is purely a quirk of English linguistic conventions that the same word is used to capture this predictive relation and to morally prescribe action. The attempt to deduce moral oughts from evolutionary facts is not still free from the criticism that it commits the naturalistic fallacy.
