Abstract
Limited research exists on preschool teachers’ knowledge on characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASD) and their perception on inclusion of young children with ADS in general education classrooms. In this preliminary study, Knowledge and perception of 70 preschool teachers at G city were surveyed. Results indicated preschool teachers lacked knowledge and held basic misconceptions about etiology, characteristics and effective interventions for children with ASD. Despite these lacked knowledge and misconceptions, preschool teachers believed that even teachers without special education teaching carrier could teach young children with special need or ASD and their perception toward inclusive education of preschooler with ASD was generally positive. Preschool teachers strongly agreed that teacher assistant and interaction with students without disabilities were very important factors for successive inclusion. Description of Open-ended questions supported the results of questionnaires. Some suggestions for future tasks and related research were presented.
