Abstract

The aim of this article is to investigate the relationship between the inclusion of the Gentiles into the people of God and the Holy Spirit in Acts with a special reference to the social function and significance of the Holy Spirit. Luke’s understanding of God’s universal bestowal of the Spirit upon non-proselyte Gentiles is different from the Jewish eschatological hope of the Spirit. The Spirit functions to verify that Gentiles believers are the genuine people of God without Torah observance. The Spirit is the identity marker of and entrance requirement into God’s renewed community. For Luke the Spirit not the law, determines the members of the covenant community. They replace the identity marker of God’s people from the law (and circumcision) by the Spirit. The Spirit plays a role as purifying both Jews and Gentiles and thus makes it possible to have table fellowship between Jews and Gentiles. The Spirit functions as directing Jewish Christians to associate with the Gentile believers. Most importantly the Spirit reconciles between Jews and Gentiles by breaking down the barriers of race and life style. On the basis of these social functions of the Spirit, Luke claims that Gentile Christians who received the Spirit do not have to undergo circumcision and keep the law in order to become full members of the covenant community. The Spirit is the ecclesiological ground for the unity and equality between Jewish believers and Gentile believers.
