Abstract

This paper examines missional possibility with cultural transmission and belief systems of Les Kabyé in Nangabu in République Togolaise(the Republic of Togo). Les Kabyé, one of the representative tribes in Togo, is not only scattered all over the country involving central and northern Togo but also well-known as a tribe possessing power and wealth. Their history originated from creation myths and origin myths of Les Kabyé, and they believe that they are protagonists in history for themselves with their own civilization, hence they have brilliant self-esteem, identity, belief sys- tems and merit. Their belief systems become a foundation of their culture, and give them ontological, emotional, and normative assumption as well as are their own traditional culture. This cultural form of Les Kabyé, namely their worldview brings them confidence with belief systems when they con- tact with the outside world or experience with it. They have a profound interest in experiencing to prove the enhance- ment of community and the transmission of culture lest internal disagree- ment is found in their traditional cultures, worldview or belief systems. Their various festivals are a typical place for experience of their traditional cultures and belief systems, and through this they connect with their identi- ties all together as well as have passed down and maintained their own cultures and belief systems. Furthermore, Les Kabyé’s belief systems from their festivals do not encourage conflicts between other cultures and peoples. Besides they make Les Kabyé hold a more prominent position than other tribes in composite cultural circumstances. Because Les Kabyé put higher value on handed down myths and cul- tures than the christian faith, it expects process for cultivation of the chris- tian fundamental truth and the gospel faith. To build the gospel faith to Les Kabyé, first above all, we have to deeply realize their implicit creation myth and understand their culture and belief systems in their myths and festivals. Missionaries also have to make efforts to exclude their traditional values and composite cultures in order to enjoy salvation and eternal well-being by being accepted from God, and to be able to accept God’s culture. For this the key points of missions(missional works) are to be close with local people, to develop a local society/community for seeking social evolution and change, and to keep a friendly relationship. Afterwards, mis- sionaries have to strive hard to entirely settle God’s truth in Les Kabyé without mixing with their traditional belief systems.
