필리오케에 대한 교부신학적 재고:95 니사의 그레고리우스와 히포의 아우구스티누스를 중심으로

초록

‘필리오케’(filioque)에 대한 장구한 논쟁사에서 동서방교회는 상호이해를 위 해 의미 있는 성과들을 이루어왔다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 동서방교회의 신학 자들은 381년의 보편공의회 신조에 첨가된 이 용어와 관련하여 진전된 화해 를 이루기 위해 해결해야 할 여러 문제점들을 여전히 가지고 있다. 남겨져 있는 문제들 중, 본 논문은 ‘성부의 단일원인성(monopatrism)을 어떻게 정의 할 것이가’라는 문제와 ‘성령의 발출에서의 성자의 역할을 어떻게 규정할 것 이가’라는 문제를 다루고자 한다. 특히 본 논문은 동서방교회의 삼위일체론 전통의 토대를 놓았다고 평가 받는 니사의 그레고리우스(Gregorius Nyssenus, 335/40-394)와 히포의 아우구스티누스(Augustinus Hipponensis, 354-430)를 연 구함으로써, 두 교부들이 제기된 두 가지 질문에 대해 유사성을 가지고 있었 음을 보이고자 한다. 첫 째 질문과 관련하여, 본 논문은 아우구스티누스가 아우구스티누스는 그레고리우스와 마찬가지로 성부께서 성자의 출생과 성령의 발출에 유일한 ‘원인’이심을 강조하였음을 보여준다. 특히, 아우구스티 누스가 ‘프린치피움’(principium)을 성자에게도 사용하였지만, 이것이 그가 강 조하는 성부의 단일원인성을 훼손하지 않음을 본 논문은 논한다. 성령의 발 출에서의 성자의 역할에 대한 두 번째 질문과 관련하여, 본 논문은 그레고리 우스가 성자에게 돌린 중재(μεσιτεία)의 역할을 강조한다. 니사의 주교는 성 부의 단일원인성 안에서 성자의 위격으로부터 성령의 위격을 보다 분명하게 구분하고 성령의 위격적 독특성을 규정하기 위해 성자께서 성령의 발출에서 중재의 역할을 하신다고 설명하였다. 이러한 그레고리우스의 생각은 아우구 스티누스가 ‘프린치피움’을 성자에게 사용할 때에 동일하게 나타난다는 것 도 논의된다. 제기된 두 질문에 대해 두 교부들에게서 찾아지는 이와 같은 유사성은 현재도 진행되고 있는 필리오케 논쟁에서 동서방교회가 보다 깊은 상호이해로 진전하는 것에 기여한다.

Abstract

In the long history of the filioque controversy, East and West have managed to reach remarkable agreement. Nevertheless, they have still failed to ach- ieve rapprochement on several crucial remaining points, leaving the con- troversy unresolved. This article examines the trinitarian theology of Gregory of Nyssa and Augustine of Hippo on two points in particular – namely, the precise definition of monopatrism and the definition of the Son’s role in the Spirit’s procession. Regarding the first point, I argue that Augustine’s application of the term ‘principium’ to the Son did not contra- dict his monopatrism, according to which the Father is the only cause for the generation of the Son and the procession of the Holy Spirit in eternity. As such, I propose that Augustine approaches the monopatrist view of Gregory, who emphasized the causal relationship between the Father (αἰτία) and the other hypostases (αἰτιατα). Regarding the second point of the Son’s role in the Spirit’s procession, I argue that Gregory used the notion of the Son’s mediation (μεσιτεία) in order to distinguish the hypostasis of the Holy Spirit from that of the Son more clearly and to express the Spirit’s personal property as Spirit of the Father and the Son. The role Gregory assigned to the Son by the notion of mediation in turn finds echoes in Augustine’s thought when he applied the term ‘principium’ also to the Son. The convergence between Gregory and Augustine on these points chal- lenges the common assumption that they stand at the head of two opposing traditions in the filioque controversy.
