헤르만 바빙크의 삼위일체론에 대한 교부신학적 재고 - 필리오케(Filioque)를 중심으로

헤르만 바빙크(Herman Bavinck, 1854.12.13.-1921.7.29.)는 신칼빈주의의 대표적인 신학자이다. 그의 신학을 다양한 관점에서 평가할 수 있겠으나, 기독교 교의의 보편성을 추구한 신학자였다는 점은 주목받아 마땅하다. 보편성을 추구하는 그의 신학의 특징은 그의 삼위일체론에서고스란히 드러난다. 특히 ‘필리오케’를 바빙크가 다룰 때, 그는 동서방교회의 전통을 정립한 교부들의 신학에서 공통점을 찾고자 노력하였다. 바빙크에 따르면, 라틴 교부뿐 아니라 헬라 교부도 성자가 성령의발출에 참여함을 부인하지 않았다. 이 같은 이해에 기초하여 바빙크는‘필리오케’가 하나님의 단일하고 단순한 신성을 강조하며, 그 안에서삼위가 상호 관계적으로 구분됨을 강조하는 것으로 이해하였다. 그러나 바빙크가 보편성을 추구하는 가운데 ‘필리오케’와 관련하여 보여주는 교부신학에 대한 이해가 얼마나 정당한지 따져 보아야 한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 바빙크가 중요하게 다루고 있는 교부의 삼위일체론을 살펴보았다. 특히 아우구스티누스(354-430)와 카파도키아 교부 중니사의 그레고리우스(335/40-394 이후)의 삼위일체론이 연구되었다. 이로써 본 논문은, 바빙크의 이해와는 달리, 두 교부 모두 성부의 단일원인성을 인정하였고, 성령의 위격적 독특성을 보다 분명하게 설명하기 위해 성자의 역할이 성령의 발출에 요청됨을 강조하였음을 논하였다. 이 같은 연구에 기초함으로써 개혁주의 신학은 바빙크가 추구한 기독교 신앙의 보편성을 더욱 심도 있게 고려하며 진일보 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Herman Bavinck(1854.12.13.–1921.7.29.) was a leading theologian of Neo-Calvinism in the Netherlands. Catholicity was one of the most impressive attributes of his theology which can be assessed from various aspects. His doctrine of the Triune God was characterized by his pursuit of catholicity. When he studied the Trinity and the ‘filioque’ problem, in particular, Bavinck considered the catholicity of the Christian doctrine seriously and searched for similarities of the tradition of the Latin and Greek Church Fathers. According to him, most of the Latin and Greek Church Fathers did not deny the role of the Son in the procession of the Holy Spirit. Based on his survey of the patristic tradition, he concluded that the filioque underlines the simple divinity and the distinction of the Persons from the perspective of the mutual relationship. Nevertheless, it needs to be asked how appropriate and accurate Bavinck’s analysis of the patristic tradition is. To reconsider his approach to patristic grounds against which he formed his thoughts about the Trinity and the filioque, this paper studies Augustine of Hippo (354-430) and Gregory of Nyssa (335/40-394) in particular. It shows that the trinitarian theologies of the two Church Fathers shared a similar idea of monopatrism and required the role of the Son in the procession of the Holy Spirit for the explicit distinction between the Son and the Spirit. Such a conclusion modifies Bavinck’s reading of the patristic tradition and his thoughts on the filioque and causes the Reformed theology to progress in the catholicity that Bavink sought.
