Abstract

This research aims to collate and analyze opinions of those on the field on the issue of usage of electronic protective gear in Taekwondo tournaments, and to present means of improvement in accordance with the results of the analysis. The results of research that utilized qualitative research method on 8 instructors and 12 athletes as subjects who participated in the University Division of the 89th National Sports Competition for this purpose are as follows. The most prominent advantages of wearing electronic protective gear during tournament include securing of fairness of and reduction in mistrust on the judgment by referees, and the fact that athlete can compete with each other in sportsman like manner. This is a result that satisfies the justification of securing fairness in judgment, which is the key purpose in introduction of electronic protective gear. However, factors such as recognition that circumstance of exhibition of scoring is not accurate when using electronic protective gear, simplification of leg and foot techniques as well as contents of competition, and interruptions in flow of competition still remains as major tasks to be resolved in order for electronic protective gears to be implemented successfully. Therefore, system and technological capabilities of electronic protective gears need to be supplemented in order to activate application of electronic protective gears. Furthermore, equipment must be improved in order to minimize the inconvenience in exhibition of techniques by athletes in competition, and amendment of detailed competition rules related to electronic protective gear is necessary. In addition, as introduction of electronic protective gear in Taekwondo tournaments is establishing itself as a practicality rather than an option, relevant personnel must recognize such major trend is a part of globalization and science of Taekwondo, and greater efforts for successfully implementation is required.
