다문화사회로의 진입에 따라 다문화교육의 중요성이 커지고 있다. 다문화교육이 지향하는 가치는 도덕과교육이 지향하는 가치와 일맥상통하는 것이기에 도덕 교과는 다문화교육의 실천을 위한 핵심 교과이다. 다문화 사회에서의 시민성교육은 다문화적 시민성(multicultural citizenship) 함양에 초점을 맞추어야 한다. 다문화적 시민성은 자신의 민족적 · 문화적 공동체와 국민 문화(national civic culture) 양자에 대한 헌신을 유지하려는 시민의 권리와 욕구를 인정하고 정당화한다. 이 논문에서는 다문화적 시민성의 개념과 구성 요소를 밝히고, 다문화적 시민성 함양을 위한 기본 원리로서 문화 감응 교수의 개념과 교사의 역할을 살펴보았다. 나아가 다문화적 시민성 함양을 위한 구체적인 지도 방안으로서 이미 경험적으로 효과가 입증된 바 있는 문화이해지와 협동학습에 대하여 알아보았다.
Abstract
Cultural diversity has become a normative description in Korean socity. Multicultural education is a systematic attempt to institutionalize cultural diversity in an educational setting. It is a concept, a framework, a way of thinking, a philosophical viewpoint, a value orientation, and a set of criteria for making decisions that better serve the educational needs of culturally diverse student populations. The goal of citizenship education in a multicultural society is to cultivate multiculral citizenship which consists of cultural competence, civic competence & civic efficacy, and intercultural competence. In order to cultivate students' multicultural citizenship, teachers ought to practice culturally responsive teaching. Based on the research results, cultural assimilator and cooperative learning are effective for developing multicultural citizenship.
