Abstract
Educating children to develop healthy emotions as they grow is a very important but not easy problem. First of all, the question arises how to understand emotions. In this article, while critically examining the emotional views presented by Peters, I referred to White's point of view on how to understand the education-centered emotional views. The emotions Peters understands can be summarized in two ways. First, emotions are not irrelevant to cognitive activities but are closely related, and they appear through appraisals of objects and situations. Emotions also have the characteristic of passivity. Peters, who has this perspective on emotions, argues that emotional education should help the development of appropriate appraisal abilities and create a pathways for control and properly revealing emotional passivity(canalization). In this regard, White criticizes Peters' perspective in several ways. First, the argument for the passivity of emotions is weak in persuasion. To criticize this, it is argued that the distinction between emotion and motivation is too contrived. Second, it is pointed out that Peters' view on emotions is related to his educational view. Criticizing the Peters' narrow focus on the pursuit of truth through the development of knowledge and understanding as the core of education, he argues that the view of emotion can also be changed if education from a broad perspective is assumed. Third, it is argued that emotional education should be conducted in the context of cultivating virtue and character. Peters' view of emotion makes it possible to see that emotion is related to the appraisal of a specific situation but has the characteristic of passivity, but its educational implications are very limited. The emotional education from the perspective of well-being that White argues provides meaningful implications in terms of character and virtue education for students.
