Abstract
This study investigates the lived experiences of grandparents engaged in skip-generation caregiving and education for their school-aged and adolescent grandchildren. Skip-generation education is a form of family education where grandparents take on the role of caregivers and educators for their grandchildren, while passing down life lessons, values, and teachings across a generational gap. Employing qualitative research methods, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten grandparents between the ages of 65 and 77. Thematic analysis yielded 17 sub-themes, which were synthesized into 5 essential themes and 1 overarching central theme. The findings reveal that the essence of skip-generation education, as experienced by these grandparents, encompasses the following: (1) providing a foundational base for the grandchildren’s holistic development; (2) encountering age-related challenges in the educational process; (3) adopting new educational perspectives distinct from those used in raising their own children; (4) transmitting contextual and relational wisdom accrued through lived experience; and (5) recognizing the complex dilemmas posed by contemporary educational expectations and norms. Participants took on the role of ‘parents once again’, experiencing a renewed parental identity and an evolved sense of educational responsibility. Notably, the grandparents emphasized character education as a central priority, playing multifaceted roles in fostering emotional development, conflict resolution skills, empathy, and consideration for others.
