Abstract
This study situates its inquiry within the recurring crisis of subjectivity in modern Korean history and places Dasok Yu Yong-mo in dialogue with Emmanuel Levinas. Yu sought to recover subjectivity by discovering the spirituality of the ssial through an integration of Christian faith and Eastern–Western thought, whereas Levinas criticized the subject-centeredness of Western metaphysics and grounded human existence in the primacy of alterity and infinite responsibility. Despite their divergent contexts, their thought reveals notable resonances. First, both reinterpreted their respective religious traditions in order to reshape philosophical discourse. Second, each regarded language not as a neutral system of signs but as a performative event: for Yu, the living Word (malssŭm) transforms existence, while for Levinas, saying (le Dire) exposes the subject in responsibility before the Other. Third, both emphasized that messianic responsibility must be embodied within individual existence. At the same time, irreducible differences remain. Yu understood transcendence in terms of immanent union and self-realization, whereas Levinas insisted on transcendence as absolute exteriority that becomes manifest only through ethical responsibility. Moreover, Yu was open to religious plurality and cultural synthesis, while Levinas maintained the uncompromising ethical command of the Jewish-biblical tradition. This study stages a dialogue between Yu and Levinas through the perspectives of harmonious contention and creative convergence. Such a dialogue does not erase difference but rather seeks a connection that acknowledges and preserves it. This comparative approach illuminates shared motifs such as self-emptying and an “economy of hospitality,” suggesting that the two traditions converge in their insistence on responsibility to the Other. Ultimately, this research highlights how the encounter between Yu and Levinas offers theological and philosophical resources for resisting impersonality and totalitarian violence in contemporary society.
