Abstract

This paper analyzed the English translation of “The Image of Mija” written by Sin kyoung-suuk and examined the norms the translator adopted when the source text could not be communicated to the target readers with word-for-word translation. The solution to minimize the loss of meaning was sought for based on the results of the analysis. The researcher performed the contrastive analysis of the source text and the target text and then examined how the target text adopts the readability strategy which is inevitably used in the Korean-English literary translation. As for the method for the analysis, the researcher selected the items of the source text which need to adopt the readability strategy in the translation, categorized into three cases according to specific factors as follows: the texts in which the original vocabularies are not communicating to the target readers: the texts that the contextual meaning is not transferred appropriately to the readers in the case of literal translation: the texts that literal translation weakens the original meaning. The contents of the data are cultural elements, Korean peculiar linguistic units such as phrase, clause or sentences, addition or omission of translation, and shifts from the source text. The specific results of the data analysis are as follows. Firstly, the target text transferred the meaning of the original naturally by pursuing the functional and cultural equivalents in the translation of cultural elements and Korean peculiar linguistic units. One feature in the translation of the units such as phrase, clause or sentences is the method to change the perspective which is one of the typical strategies that the English-native translators would adopt. It helps the target readers communicate comfortably with original. Another feature is that the translator deals with the parts of the narration as speech with quotation marks.
