초록

This paper analyzes the translation of a Korean short story, 'The Road to Sampo' written by Hwang Sukyoung to search for the norms, and to present suggestions for future productions. While there are papers and books dealing with Korean-English literary translation from the viewpoint of bibliography, researches on product analysis, translation strategy, and translation criticism have not been performed on full scale. The researcher will find the norms of the target text and discuss the translator's strategy based on the analysis. In the process, examining the existing status, suggesting the alternatives, and getting the norms are performed. As for the theoretical background of this study, 'Equivalence theory', and 'Descriptive translation studies' are adopted. The discussions are developed based on these theories. 'Equivalent theory' describes the nature and the extent of the relationships which exist between source texts and target texts. 'Descriptive Translation Studies' puts the translation in the context of socio-cultural system, and draws implications for future translating. The result of the data analysis reveals that the translation strategy of this product is focused on communication with the readers rather than the pursuit of fidelity to the source text. The translation applies a communication tool to help readers understand Korean culture and custom. The translators try to communicate with the target readers by adding contents of the target text which are not in the source text. It is regrettable that the peculiar Korean culture and beauty cannot be reflected sufficiently in the translation. An important factor of appropriate literary translation is natural translation which makes the target readers feel comfortable in the linguistic and cultural fields. Desirable translation achieves 'equivalent effect' by itself and meets the target readers' linguistic needs and cultural expectation.
