Abstract

It has been often said that Lee Hyo-seok is 'an aesthete regardless of times' and 'the Western tasted modernist'. However, when we have a close look at his works, we can notice a wide range of spectrums distributed in them, although they reveal strong esthetic aspect. There are so called companion literature such as <a city and ghost>, <a march>. In addition, there exist some works with subject matter of life in rural communities like <a mountain valley>, <a wild apricot>, as well as other works showing the recognition of the traditional value <a quiet gloss>(은은한 빛) and <a mourning clothes and celadon porcelain>(소복과 청차), which are published in his later years. When we watch this change represented in his literary works as his growing from the wisdom of literary age, we can perceive that the author, Lee Hyo-seok who had revealed an exotic mood as much as he was once called 'butter literature' was actually going through the constant change. This thesis inquires these diverse tendencies in terms of the author's horme-oriented aspect and longing for liberty. The gender and nature represented in his literary works contain pure dream and longing for liberty of characters who struggle to free themselves to a true sense of disillusionment in the real world. Under the colonial period, what is more, under the merchandised and vulgarized realities, Hyo-seok tried to express his instinctive dream and desire for overcoming this reality through the gender and nature. However, his works make us feel pathetic in that it is impossible to be real in the real world.
