대화 텍스트에 나타난 칭찬 화행의 양상

이 연구의 목적은 대화 텍스트에 나타난 칭찬 화행의 양상을 계량적인 방법으로 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 텔레비전 드라마 대본과 영화 시나리오를 자료로 삼아 칭찬 화행의 양상을 살펴보았다. 칭찬의 주제로는 상대방의 능력에 관한 것이 가장 높은 빈도로 나타나며 남성 화자보다 여성 화자가 칭찬 화행을 더 많이 수행하고 있다. 이와 같은 현상은 여성의 대화 목적이 관계 중심적이기 때문에 칭찬을 통해 상대방과의 인간관계를 유지하는 데에 활용하는 것과 밀접한 연관이 있다. 칭찬의 표현 양상은 명시적으로 칭찬 화행을 수행하는 경우와 부가적인 요소가 병행하여 나타나는 경우로 나뉜다. 명시적인 칭찬 표현 이외에 부가적인 요소를 병행하는 것은 화자의 입장에서는 경제성의 원리에 어긋나는 것이지만 청자에 대한 적극적 체면 세우기 실천이다. 부가적인 표현의 책략 유형은 ‘알아차리기, 생각 전하기, 물어 보기, 이유 설명하기’ 등으로 나타나는데 이와 같은 요소는 상대방에 대한 관심의 표현이며 친밀한 유대감을 표현하는 방법으로 활용되고 있다. 특히 부가적인 표현 중에는 ‘생각 전하기’가 가장 높은 빈도를 나타내었다. 칭찬 화행은 상대방의 좋은 점을 인정해 주고 상대에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 나타냄으로써 우호적인 인간관계를 유지하기 위해 사용되는 하나의 언어 책략이다. 따라서 칭찬 화행의 생각 전하기는 언어의 정보 전달의 기능보다는 상대방과의 유대감을 강하게 하고 인간관계를 확립하는 요소로 작용하는 대표적인 방법임을 확인할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study aims at studying how sociocultural behaviors can solve conflicts through verbal actions called the speech act of compliment. A compliment speech act is a linguistic strategy that speakers use to maintain friendly relationships by recognizing hearers’ strengths and expressing positive attitude to hearers. The most frequently used topics of compliments are ability of partners. Female speakers make more compliments than male speakers, for female speakers tend to make relationship-oriented conversations. Expression of compliments is divided into clear complimentary statements; and complimentary statements with additional elements. Adding extra elements to clear complimentary statements is economically inefficient, but speakers do this to respect hearers’ dignity. It is said that acts of compliment are not often seen in Korean culture and we haven’t lively discussed that topic in Korean language so far. However, I hope that comprehensive studies on largely spoken corpus and special features of pan-linguistic speech acts of compliment will be done based on this study.
