개화기 한국 번역 작품의 기술적, 기능적 분석

개화기의 사상가들은 자국 국민의 계몽이나 교화를 위해서 외국 작품의 번역물을 소개했다. 따라서 개화기의 번역물은 번역 독자들을 설득하거나, 교화할 목적을 갖고 있었다. 이런 특성 때문에 이 시기의 번역은 번역과정에서 원문이 많이 훼손되거나, 원래의 언어가 아니라 일본어나 중국어로 번역된 것을 대본으로 중역(重譯)하는 경우가 흔히 있었다. 그러므로 개화기의 번역물은 언어적 접근으로 분석하기는 어렵다. 개화기 번역물의 시대적 위상과 조작여부, 그리고 개화기 번역자들의 사상, 번역 방식 등은 그 시대의 번역물을 정의하는 요소들이다. 개화기 한국의 번역문학의 위상은 중국, 일본과 서로 연관성을 보이는데, 이는 개화기에는 서양문헌의 대본이 주로 일본어와 중국어의 번역본이었다는 사실에서도 드러난다. 이 시기에 번역을 주도적으로 소개한 이는 최남선이었으며, 주요 수용매체는 『소년』『청춘』이었다. 당시의 번역은 일본어나 중국어를 통한 중역(重譯)의 형태를 띠고 있었으며, 번역 방식도 완역(完譯)이나 축자역(逐字譯)이 아닌 초역(抄譯), 경개역(梗槪譯), 축역(縮譯) 등의 모습을 보여주었다. 이 논문은 한국의 개화기에 소개된 번역 문학을 번역학 이론인 ‘기술(記述) 번역학’의 틀에서 분석했다. 구체적으로 개화기 번역물의 환경적 영향을 ‘다중체계이론’을 근거로 살펴보았고, 당시의 대표적 번역자인 최남선의 번역 방식을 통해서 번역물에 가해진 ‘조작’의 상태, 그리고 당시의 번역 규범과 번역의 기능을 분석했다. 개화기의 번역 방식은 원본이 ‘표현적 기능’을 중시한 고급의 문학작품의 번역이라 할지라도 ‘정보적 기능’의 역할을 우선적으로 고려할 수밖에 없는 상황이었다. 이 시기의 번역물이 전체의 내용을 요약하거나, 아니면 작품의 일부만을 번역한 것은 작품의 내용을 알리려는 ‘정보적 기능’의 역할을 우선적으로 생각했기 때문이다. 또한 독자를 격려하고, 계몽하려는 의도 때문에 ‘작용적 기능’도 함께 할 수밖에 없었다. 최남선의 번역에 일종의 ‘조작’이 포함되었던 것은 이 ‘작용적 기능’ 즉, 계몽과 교화의 기능을 염두에 두었기 때문이다.
Abstract
Intellectuals in enlightening period of Joseon translated the western literature in order to enlighten and civilize their people. The translations often deviated from its source text or retranslated the Chinese or Japanese translations for their purpose of enlightenment. Therefore it is difficult to analyze the translations in the period by linguistic approach. The translations of the enlightening period can be defined from the viewpoint of the status of translations, manipulation, and the translators' ideology. The status of translations is related with Chinese and Japanese literary works because the translators in the period translated western literature through Chinese or Japanese translation. Choi Namsun took a leading role in introducing foreign literature through the main journals publishing the translations that time, 'Sonyun' and 'Chungchoon'. The translational methods used were abridgement, or summary translation rather than complete or literal translation. In this paper, translations in the enlightening period are analyzed within the framework of Descriptive Translation Studies and Functional Theory. The situational influence has its theoretical ground on 'Poly-system Theory. In specific, the manipulation of translations, translation norms and function are examined through the translation strategy of Choi Namsun, a representative translator of the time. The translators in the enlightening period had to consider the function of information in the first place even in the literary translation which values highly 'expressive function'. Abridged or summary translations are the symbolic representation of a focus on ‘informative function'. The translations also include 'operative function' in order to encourage and persuade the readers. The reason that Choi Namsun's translations took manipulation is that he always considered the 'operative function' of enlightenment and civilization.
