Abstract
In this study, we quantitatively and qualitatively examined the nature of science(NOS) in the climate change and energy fields of elementary school 3rd to 6th grade science textbooks according to the 2015 revised science curriculum. For quantitative and qualitative analysis, the conceptual framework devised for NOS analysis of textbooks in the preceding research was modified and used to match the level of elementary school science textbooks. At this time, paragraphs and subheadings were set as each analysis unit. As a result of analyzing NOS in four categories, in the quantitative analysis, Category I (the knowledge of science), Category II (the investigative nature of science), Catergory Ⅳ(interaction of science, technology, and society), and Category Ⅲ (science as a way of thinking) showed the high ratio in the order. But in the result of converting the qualitative analysis result into a distribution according to the basic unit, Category Ⅳ, Category Ⅰ, Category Ⅱ(Category 1 and Category 2 have the same ratio), and Category Ⅲ showed the high ratio in that order. This means that in the field of climate change and energy, paragraphs or sentences contain NOS related to scientific knowledge or scientific methods and procedures, but NOS related to STS interactions is being dealt with in the overall context. Meanwhile, the difference between these quantitative and qualitative analysis results suggests that it is necessary to use a mixed research method to analyze the NOS included in the textbook. Based on these results, this study discussed the significance of NOS analysis in the field of climate change and energy and the need to adopt mixed research method to analyze NOS included in textbooks.
