Abstract
The ROK Army has transformed itself from a constabulary of an internal security force to an army of a national defense force during the Korean War. This process of transformation is not a simple transition but a thorough transformation. This has been possible with assistance and help from the U.S. Eighth Army and KMAG. The Americans saw the serious problems within the ROK Army but could not take a time to remedy those, because of the urgent situations on the front. With the beginning of the armistice talks in July 1951, both Americans and Koreans launched a program of transformation that would cure ROK units' continuing disasters. In order to transform the ROK Army, they focused on officer corps' leadership, individual and unit training according to the U.S. Army's field manual and doctrine, and new weapons of artillery and tanks. ROK Army's officers were not prepared to command and lead their units in the field, where they had experienced with the Japanese army. Every effort was put to enhance officers' leadership and credibility. Combat performance of ROK units also needed urgent cures. Individual training at the schools and unit training at the field training centers(FTC) changed soldiers and units to warriors and strong phalanx. With these changes in characteristics, the ROK Army could introduce new weapons in its inventory; tanks and heavy artillery pieces. At the end of the war, the ROK Army could complete its first 'military transformation.'
