본 연구는 대한민국 육군이 창군기를 거치며 제도적 틀을 갖추기까지 약 30년간에 걸쳐 성립된 초기 역사기록물의 성격과 변천 과정을 규명함으로써 향후 군사사연구의 기초를 마련하고자 하였다. 해방 직후 미군정기와 정부 수립 이후의 육군은창설과 6․25전쟁 수행 과정에서 다양한 기록을 남겼으며, 그 대표적인 예로 육군역사일지, 육군종합보고, 정기 역사보고, 부대상보 등이 있다. 그러나 지금까지 이들기록물은 개별적이고 단편적으로 다루어졌을 뿐, 사료학적 관점에서 그 성격과 유형을 구분한 연구는 미흡하였다. 이에 본 연구는 위 기록물을 대상으로 외적·내적 사료비판을 적용하여 작성 배경, 기록 방식, 내용적 특징을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 초기 기록물은 단순한 연대기적 보고에서 점차 제도화된 형식으로 발전하였으며, 각 기록물은 서로 다른 목적과성격을 지니고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 나아가 이러한 구분은 기록물의 상호 보완적 활용을 가능하게 하고, 군사사 연구에서 기초 자료로서의 가치를 제고할 수 있음을 시사한다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 육군 초기 역사기록물의 성격과 변천을 체계적으로 분석함으로써, 한국군사사의 심화 연구와 역사 기록의 학문적 활용 가능성을 넓히는 데 기여하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study examines the nature and evolution of the Republic of Korea Army’s early historical records to establish a foundation for future military history research. Following the Army’s formation under U.S. military rule and its participation in the Korean War, various records were produced—including the Army History Journal, Army Comprehensive Reports, Regular History Reports, and Unit Reports—yet they have largely been treated in a fragmented manner without sufficient historiographical analysis. By applying external and internal criticism, this study reveals that these records developed from simple chronological accounts into institutionalized formats, each with distinct purposes and characteristics. Clarifying these differences underscores their potential for complementary use and enhances their value as fundamental sources for military historiography. Ultimately, the study highlights the need for systematic classification and analysis of early Army records to advance research on Korean military history and enhance their academic and practical utility.
