Abstract

The Korean War dealt a severe blow to the medical system of the South Korean Army, which at the time existed with only a weak organizational foundation. When the war broke out, the army requisitioned civilian hospitals in Seoul to treat ROKA soldiers, but they were unable to cope with the overwhelming influx of patients. As the military situation worsened, army hospitals withdrew, provided medical services whenever possible, and then relocated again. In response, the army urgently organized surgical treatment teams based on the Army Medical Field Service School to support frontline divisions, worked to supplement the evacuation system using vehicles and railroads, and expanded the number of hospitals. As the situation improved on the battlefield, army hospitals joined the advance northward, but after the intervention of Chinese forces forced another retreat, the army once again expanded its hospitals and re-established the Army Medical School to secure adequate military medical personnel. During periods when the front stabilized, the army sought to absorb advanced medical technology from the U.S. military, resulting in improvements in the Korean military medicine during the war. Since the outbreak of the war, the U.S. military provided indispensable support for maintaining and developing South Korea’s medical functions and also played a role as a conduit for the transfer of new technologies.
