Abstract

This paper examines how foreign languages were perceived by modern Japanese writers during the active reception of Western culture, focusing on the works of Tanizaki Junichiro. Early writers’ translation activities laid the foundation for restructuring Japanese literary style in a modern sense, while contact with foreign languages exposed both the limitations and possibilities of the Japanese language. Tanizaki not only incorporated English but also explored dialects and classical Japanese, experimenting with a multi-layered style that transcended the notion of a singular ‘national language’. Rather than serving as mere objects of study, foreign languages are closely tied to cultural identity, expanding expressive possibilities beyond the uniformity of the Japanese language. Through the reception of foreign languages and the process of translation, modern Japanese literature underwent dynamic transformations. Within this interaction, Tanizaki established an original style that contributed to the field’s further development.
