동북아시아 제 지역 초기복합사회 비교

Comparing the Chiefly Societies of Northeast Asia

초록

본고는 진화론적 틀에 따라 문명의 발생을 도식적으로 맞추어가는 중국의 ‘探源工程’식 연구를 극복하고 東北아시아 복합사회의 발달을 보다 보편적인 고고학적 논의의 틀 속에서 이해하는 노력의 일환으로 중국과 한국의 4개 지역 10개 수장 사회의 특징을 비교한다. 그러한 비교는 ① 생계경제(의 집약화), ② 공공(토목)사업, ③ 위세와 재화, 수공생산 전문화, 장거리교역, ④ 갈등과 전쟁, 등의 4개 영역(dimension)에서 이루어진다. 이러한 영역별 접근을 통해 우선 각 영역에서 10개 수장사회 서로 얼마나 다르고 얼마나 유사한지를 밝히고, 더 나아가서 그러한 상사ㆍ상이성이 각 수장사회의 사회구조 및 자연환경의 상사ㆍ상이성과 어떻게 연결될 수 있는지에 주목한다. 이러한 작업은 결국 그러한 상사ㆍ상이성이 어떻게 나타날 수 있었는지에 대한 해석은 물론, 東北아시아지역에서 초기복합사회의 등장의 과정과 기제에 대한 이론화의 기초를 제공할 것이다. 분석과 비교를 통해 밝혀진 바는, 東北아시아의 제 지역에서 수장사회는 독자적으로 발생ㆍ발달해 가면서 차이점이 나타난다는 것이다. 그러한 차이는 상당 부분 각각이 처한 자연환경적 변이에 기인하고 있음을 부정할 수는 없다. 그런데 일부 사회들은 매우 유사한 자연환경적 배경을 가지면서 매우 인접하여 있으며, 내부구조의 특징이 유사함에도 불구하고 매우 상이한 궤적을 보이는 경우가 발견되기도 한다. 또한 자연환경과 사회구조상의 유사성이 간취된다 하더라도 영역별 양상에서는 뚜렷한 일관성을 찾기는 어렵다. 결국, 東北아시아 제 지역의 초기 복합사회는 획일적인 모형으로 설명할 수 없음이 분명해진 셈이다. 이런 상황에서 후진적인 사회형식론적 틀에 따라, 소위 ‘문명’ 발생의 궤적을 추적하는 작업을 넘어, 주어진 환경적 제한요인들에 적응해가면서 이해관계에 따라, 상이한 궤적을 형성해가는 사회적 주체에 대해 관심을 기우림으로써 東北아시아 초기복합사회의 발달을 더욱 역동적으로 설명해 갈 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

This paper attempts at describing and comparing the characteristics of eight chiefly societies from various regions of Northeast Asia that represent similar and/or different environmental settings. The comparison are performed in five dimensions: local warfare, longdistance exchange, local subsistence, public works, and prestige and finance. The comparisons primarily concern how similar or different the eight trajectories are to each other in the individual dimensions, and how the dimensional similarity and dissimilarity could be related to the structural and environmental similarity and dissimilarity. These works will provide substantial basis for interpreting how the similarity and dissimilarity came into. Analyzing various lines of evidence reveals that chiefly societies of various regions of Northeast Asia developed independently and represented socioeconomic differences. The differences seem to have been partly attributed to given natural environment where the chiefly societies settled. However some societies represented a significant different trajectories, despite substantial similarity in terms of internal structure and environmental settings, and geographical vicinity. Two chiefly societies from central western Korean Peninsula could be the most salient example. This suggests that uniform model could not explain the development of complex societies even in Northeast Asia. Exploring various activities of social actors with different interests could be more promising for understanding on dynamic aspects of the development.
