한반도 신석기시대 복합수렵채집 사회 성격 시론

초록

본고는 한반도 신석기시대 수렵채집사회의 성격을 복합수렵채집사회 논의와 관련하여 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 복합수렵채집사회는 정착과 마을 생활, 전문화되고 복잡한 기술체계의 발전, 활발한 저장전략의 구사, 사회의 분화 및 위계의 제도화, 원거리 교역 등 농경 사회 이후에 등장한다고 여겨졌던 특징들을 가지고 있는 수렵채집사회를 단순 수렵채집 사회와 구별하여 개념화시킨 것이다. 한반도 중서부 이남 지역의 신석기시대 조기~중기에 이르는 자료와 연구 성과를 검토한 결과, 한반도의 신석기시대 정착수렵채집민은 위에 언급한 특징들의 상당수를 보유하고 있는 복합수렵채집사회로 규정할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 그러나 특정 사회를 복합수렵채집사회로 규정하는 것만으로는 부족하며, 복합수렵채집사회의 넓은 스펙트럼을 고려할 때 개별 집단들의 다양성을 권력의 분포나 생업 기술체계의 측면에서 다층적으로 판단할 필요가 있을 것이다. 그런 차원에서 본다면 한반도 신석기시대 중서부 이남지역 조기~중기의 정착수렵채집사회는 수혈주거로 구성된 마을에 기반한 정착생활, 활발한 저장 전략 구사, 비전업적 전문화에 의한 기술체계의 발달, 단속적인 원거리 교역의 구사, 곡물 재배(전기 이후), 종적 사회 분화의 미약한 발달 및 생업, 의례 등과 관련된 횡적 사회 분화, 획득 지위 지도자의 존재 가능성 등을 특징으로 하는 복합수렵채집사회로 볼 수 있다.

Abstract

This study focuses on the characteristics of lifeways of sedentary Chulmun hunter-gatherers in Korean peninsula with a topic of complex hunter-gatherers. Complex hunter-gatherers are characterized by sedentary village life, development of specialized technology, strategy of storage, social differentiation and institutionalization of the hierarchy, long-distance exchange and so on. Those originally were regarded as proxies of one after agrarian societies. The analysis of data and research on the Initial to Middle phase of the Neolithic period of the Midwest Korean Peninsula shows that hunter-gatherers in the period had considerable amount of proxies of the complex hunter-gatherers. However, simply assigning certain societies as the complex hunter-gatherers with the existence of such characteristics or not is not sufficient. Rather, varieties of each group should be explained by the degree of each categories, not by their existence. In this sense, the Chulmun societies of the Initial to Middle phase in the Midwest Korean Peninsula represent complex hunter-gatherers with characteristics of sedentary life based on pit-dwellings in a village, mundane strategy of storage, development of highly specialized technology, intermittent long-distance exchange, initial crop cultivation after the Early phase, horizontal social-differentiation rather than institutionalization of hierarchy and possible presence of leaders who had acquired status.
