Abstract

This paper focuses on the dynamics between factors that generate hierarchy among members of society and egalitarian mechanisms that suppress such hierarchy, in order to supplement the perspective that dichotomizes prehistoric societies into egalitarian and inegalitarian ones. To this end, it examines the limitations of neo-evolutionary classifications and considers the processes through which hierarchy emerges, as well as the mechanisms by which it is controlled by the majority of social members, through examples from great apes and hunter-gatherer societies. Social hierarchization and counter-hierarchization interact with various factors, including population growth, surplus production, exchange, communal labor, and intergroup conflict, and their specific manifestations vary according to the social and environmental conditions faced by a given group. Therefore, the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods cannot be defined as consistently egalitarian or inegalitarian societies. An analysis of the Korean Neolithic period, particularly the Unseo-dong site in Incheon, shows that although some signs of hierarchization appeared in large-scale Neolithic settlements, the development into a hierarchical society was ultimately limited by restraining mechanisms such as group fission. Prehistoric societies on the Korean Peninsula should therefore be understood not as having a fixed character, but as fluid and complex structures in which the power of a minority oriented toward hierarchy coexisted with the power of the majority seeking to maintain equality.
