『울릉도 사적』의 필사 연도와 『울릉도』의 ‘우산도’ 해석을 둘러싼 논란에 대한 변석(辯析)

Abstract

The controversy regarding Ulleungdo sajeok (Record of Ulleungdo Mission,『 蔚陵島事蹟』) is about the transcribed year, and the contention over Ulleungdo (Ulleungdo) is about its interpretation. The Ulleungdo sajeok was once known to have Shin Kwang-bak’s manuscripts only, but it is now clear that it includes two more things in addition to Shin Kwang-bak’s manuscripts. Because Shin Kwang-bak’s manuscript was written in The Epitaph of the Two Generals 『( 節度公兩 世碑銘』), it turns out that the existing theory of Shin Kwang-bak’s copy of 1722 was incorrect. But even if 1782 was proven to be the year that Shin Kwang-bak wrote Ulleungdo sajeok, it is rash to jump into a conclusion that Ulleungdo sajeok was copied in 1782. The Epitaph of the Two Generals contains Epitaph and Funeral Poetry in addition to Ulleungdo sajeok . However, there are 12 letters in the Record of Ulleungdo Mission which were not in the Epitaph and Funeral Poetry , thus it is hard to say that the three documents were written in the same year. Therefore, there is a possibility that the year of transcribing Ulleungdo sajeok and the year of editing The Epitaph of the Two Generals may differ. However, there is a controversy that Park Se-dang’s writings of Ulleungdo and Usando are the same as those of Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam (Revised and augmented edition of the survey of the geography of Korea), and therefore Usando cannot be interpreted as Dokdo. Park Se-dang intentionally deleted what he wrote in Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam: “Usan and Ulleung are one single island.” This means that Park Se-dang denied Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam’s theory. I have proved the difference of the meaning of the word “visible” in Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam and what Park Sedang said in Ulleungdo. Park Se-dang used the word ‘’visible” to describe what humans can see with their eyes, meaning that Usando could be seen from Ulleungdo.
