한국 문헌의 ‘울릉도·우산도’ 기술과그 계보에 관한 고찰

Abstract

This article examines how Korean documents described “Ulleungdo– Usando” and the genealogy of those documents. “Usando” is first found in Goryeosa (History of Goryeo),a Korean government publication and subsequently in Sejong sillok jiriji (The Book of Geography in the Annals of King Sejong), Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam (Revised and Augmented Edition of the Survey of the Geography of Korea), Dongguk munheon bigo (Comprehensive Study of the Written Records on Korea), Mangi yoram (Handbook of State Affairs for the Monarch), and Jeungbo munheon bigo (Revised and Enlarged Edition of the Comprehensive Study of the Written Records on Korea). Also, the content from this book appeared subsequently in individual publications, and there were additional depictions of the Ulleungdo Incident. However, intellectuals in the late Joseon Dynasty succeeded to their predecessors’ view regarding the content in Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam (Usando and Ulleungdo are originally one island), but did not accept the view of the content in Sejong sillok jiriji , where Usan and Ulleung are two separate islands. However, Sin Gyeong–jun conducted historical research regarding the following content from Sinjeung Dongguk yeoji seungnam , “Someone says that Usan and Ulleung are originally one island.” As a result, he discovered the fact that Sambongdo(Three Peak Island) and Usando, as shown from the documents, are different islands, and are not Ulleungdo, but was matched with the Japanese name “Matsushima.” Sin Gyeong–jun, himself, his contemporaries, and later generations accepted his view, which led to the rootage of the “Usan–Ulleung Two Islands Theory” in the eighteenth century. However, as publication of atlases increased there appeared a gap between the location of Usando in books and on maps. This phenomenon of estrangement became more intensified because “Matsushima,” the Japanese term for Ulleungdo, was used in the late nineteenth century.
