Abstract
From 1980 to 2000, the centralized system theory(集權體制論), the nabu system theory(那部體制論), and the trends in research on the grave keeper(守墓人) and tomb guarding system(守墓制), which were raised as major issues in the study of Goguryeo history, were summarized. The question of whether the state system of early Goguryeo should be viewed as a centralized system or a nabu system is closely related to the question of how to understand the process of state formation and nature of Goguryeo. Depending on the perspective on this, the understanding of the political operation method, the official rank system, the nature of major government positions, the local government system, and the Jega Council(諸加會 議) differs. The centralized system theorists believed that a centralized system centered on the king was established from the early Goguryeo period. Therefore, all nobles were ranked under the king by the rank system, and the highest position, the national prime minister(國 相), was the head of the council of the king and was in charge of running the state by following the king’s orders. It was understood that local officials were dispatched early on to directly rule the country. The Nabu system theorists believed that Goguryeo was established through the multi-layered combination of political powers in the middle reaches of the Amnok River, and that the Gyerubu, to which the king belonged, and the four Nabu were the main axes to run the country. After that, power was gradually concentrated around the king, the autonomy of the Nabu was weakened, and the Nabu chiefs and other nobles were ranked by the rank system and placed directly under the king. It was believed that local officials were dispatched from around the mid-to-late 3rd century. During this period, the study of the Gwanggaeto Stele also entered a new phase. Moving beyond the stage of focusing only on the so-called Sinmyo year(辛卯年) clause, research was conducted on various aspects such as the founding myth, the process of Gwanggaeto the Great’s territorial expansion, the Goguryeo king’s view of the world, and the tomb-guarding man’s household. Of these, particular attention was focused on Goguryeo tomb-guarding men and tomb-guarding rites. In academic circles, there was active discussion on the status of Grave keeper(守墓人), the Gukyeon(國 烟) and Ganyeon(看烟), the method of carrying out tomb-guarding duties, and the affiliations of Grave keeper recorded on the Gwanggaeto Stele. The research during this period became the foundation for the further in-depth study of Goguryeo Grave keeper and tomb-guarding rites.
