Abstract

This paper commemorates the completion of the Comprehensive History of Goguryeo by the Northeast Asian History Foundation by examining the overall characteristics of Goguryeo’s archaeological sites and artifacts, as well as key research issues. Goguryeo originated around the Hun River basin and the middle and upper reaches of the Yalu River in the 1st century BCE. From its early days, Goguryeo constructed fortresses on rugged mountain summits, establishing a defensive system distinct from that of China, and adopted stone mound tombs as its burial practice, unlike neighboring countries. Its metalworking techniques included cast iron technology inherited from the Yan state and forged iron techniques introduced from the Han dynasty, which were utilized to produce weapons and agricultural tools. The influence of Buyeo culture is also evident in horse harnesses. After relocating its capital to the Guknae region, Goguryeo developed into a centralized monarchy. By the 4th century, mediumto large-scale mountain fortresses with valley-enclosing structures served as administrative centers for regional governance. In addition to stone fortresses built with wedge-shaped stones, earthen fortresses began to appear. Stone mound tombs evolved from platform styles to stepped configurations, and burial chambers shifted from stone pits to stone chambers. Royal tombs were constructed as massive stepped stone mounds. Meanwhile, ongoing conflicts with the Murong Xianbei facilitated the introduction of mural tombs, horse harness equipment sets, dark burnished pottery, and belt decorations to Goguryeo. Furthermore, Buddhism, transmitted from the Former Qin, significantly influenced Goguryeo culture. Goguryeo demonstrated an active yet selective approach to integrating foreign elements, transforming them to suit its own cultural context. In 427 CE, Goguryeo relocated its capital to Pyeongyang. Having secured complete control over the Liaodong region, the kingdom established multilayered defense systems along key routes leading to the capital. Its burial practices shifted to stone-chambered earthen mound tombs. Royal tombs also adopted this style, with their interiors adorned with mural paintings. Late-period tomb mural paintings evolved into a distinctive funerary art, filling entire walls with depictions of the Four Guardian Deities. In 475 CE, Goguryeo conquered Baekje’s capital, Hanseong, and extended its territory to the Geum River basin. Extensive excavations of Goguryeo sites in present-day South Korea have provided a deeper understanding of fortress construction techniques and facilitated in-depth studies of its artifacts.
