Abstract
This study aims to explain variation in the result of popular uprisings fordemocracy in five Middle East countries: Syria, Bahrain, Egypt, Yemen, andLibya. Previous study on democratization tends to ignore the importance ofintra-military division, paying great attention to the growth of civil society. However, if it is taken into account that dictators often strain to get politicalsupport from the military, it is not surprising that unintended outcome of thiseffort splits the military and makes military officers who could not gaindictator's favor deviate to revolutionaries. As a consequence, this study firstdivide the intra-military division into three types ( vertical division, horizontaldivision, and cohesive structure) and then demonstrates how this pattern ofintra-military division affected political transition to democracy, respectively. Syria and Bahrain in which dictators recruited officers from social groupclosely connected with them successfully survived democracy revolution thanksto its military that actively engaged in anti-revolutionary struggle. To thecontrary, Egypt, Yemen, and Libya, in which dictators used divide-and-conquerstrategy to seize control over the military, failed to survive democracyrevolution thanks to intra-military struggle that prevented dictators fromexercising full coercive capacity over revolutionaries. The result of this studygives an implication that not only growth of civil society but alsointra-military division should be taken into account in order to better explainpolitical transition from dictatorship to democracy.
