Abstract
This study attempts to understand young children’s identities with digital avatars through Bakhtin’s theory of Dialogism and Heteroglossia. The researcher collected data through informal interviews with 21 young children (age five) and participant observations for four months, in a daycare center in Seoul, South. Korea. As a result, some children made their scary but fun avatars (e.g., vampire) to express themselves as fun and pleasant in various social relationships with peers, parents, and teachers. Also, in the making of digital avatars, they identified themselves as the best friend in their social group by choosing the same avatar items and backgrounds. Others used avatars items to express themselves or what they want to be. This study shows digital avatars as young children’s social and visual language and heteroglossia to reveal their various identities. As ideological becomings and active meaning-makers, young children reveal their perspectives and their own images through social interactions with peers, parents, teachers, social discourses, and local communities. This study is meaningful as a fundamental study that analyzes young children’s complex social identities by using avatar-making as a concept of representation in the virtual worlds, such as the multiverse in the digital era
