Abstract

This study aimed to understand the characteristics of digital play in VR and to assess whether VR could be a tool to enrich children’s play experiences. The research focused on analyzing the observed meta-communication between children during unstructured VR play sessions. For the study, 24 five-year-old children from a private kindergarten in Seoul were observed 2 to 4 times a week from May to October. Observations were documented through detailed field notes, and the children’s meta-communication was analyzed through comprehensive data analysis. The research findings revealed several interesting aspects of young children’s meta-communication within the continuum of virtual reality and reality. First, children exhibited dynamic meta-communication patterns as they moved between play inside and outside the VR playframe. Second, language-based meta-communication was prevalent when planning play and explaining their actions. Third, explicit and implicit meta-communication patterns shifted depending on the play context. In summary, young children engage in and unfold play in complex ways during natural digital play situations using VR. Their play initiation and development closely resemble traditional play, even though it crosses boundaries between virtual and real worlds. These findings highlight the need for developing high-quality content specifically for young children in educational settings where VR-based digital play is utilized. Additionally, teacher training and professional development are essential for educators to effectively select and utilize such content.
