저소득층 고등학생의 학교적응을 돕는 대인관계 양상에 대한 질적 연구

이 연구는 빈곤이라는 역경에도 불구하고 학교생활을 적응적으로 이끌어주는 저소득층 청소년들의 대인관계의 양상과 그 촉진요인을 알아보는 것을 목적으로 수행되었다. 이를 위해 자신의 꿈을 키워가는 저소득층 청소년을 집중적으로 지원하는 국내 한 장학재단의 고등학교 장학생 15명을 대상으로, 적응에 도움이 되는 관계를 주제로 자료를 수집했다. 1학년 겨울방학과 2학년 여름방학에 한번씩 2차에 걸쳐 당시까지의 가족관계, 친구관계, 교사관계를 비롯한 의미 있는 관계에 대한 반구조화 1:1 심층면접을 실시했다. 심층면접의 모든 내용을 학생들의 동의를 얻어 녹취하고, 녹취된 자료를 전사한 다음 사회적 관계에 대한 학생들의 경험과 의미를 분석했다. 이 연구를 통해 확인된 우리나라 저소득층 청소년의 적응을 돕는 관계의 특성은 네 가지로 도출되었다. 첫째, 학생들이 맺는 관계 중 가장 핵심적 영역은 부모(또는 양육자)와의 관계로, 특히 어머니의 헌신에서 출발하고 있었고 이에 보답하고자 하는 마음과 가족 내에서의 주인의식으로 발전해 나가고 있음을 확인했다. 비록 가족을 책임져야 한다는 부담감이 있지만, 이러한 부담감이 열심히 살아가는 동력으로 작용하고 있기도 했다. 둘째, 친구는 놀이와 여가를 함께 하고 어떤 이야기도 큰 설명 없이 나눌 수 있어 고단한 삶에 단비와 같은 존재로 기능하고 있었다. 그리고 이러한 편안한 관계의 유지는 서로 처지가 비슷한 동질감이 토대가 되고 있었다. 셋째, 장학재단에서 제공되는 장학금과 멘토링을 비롯한 교사나 친척 등 학생들을 지지하고 경제적으로 지원하는 사회적 관계도 중요한 역할을 하고 있었다. 비록 심리적으로 밀착되어 있지 않지만 또 다른 안전망으로서의 역할을 해내고 있다. 마지막으로 학생들이 가족을 비롯한 주변 사람들과 맺은 긍정적 관계는 낙관성, 책임감, 독립심이라는 개인적 특성을 형성해 학생들의 적응을 돕고 있었다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the nature of social relationships that facilitate the school adjustment of high school students even with the adversity of poverty. 15 high school students receiving scholarships from a scholarship foundation of Korea, which is intensively supports low-income youth, were selected for this study. And they were supposed to have clear goals and we interviewed them about their social relations facilitating adjustment. Two times of semi-structured 1:1 in-depth interviews concerning their relationships with family members, friends, and teachers were conducted in winter vacation of 10th grade and in summer vacation of 11th grade. All the contents of the in-depth interviews were recorded and transcribed for the analysis. Additionally, the experiences and meanings of the participants of the social relationships were abstracted and analysed. Adaptive nature of social relationships that help low-income youth identified through this study can be summarized in four. First, the most critical social relationships were relationships with mother (or guardian), and this relationship also develop the ownership of family. Sometimes it was perceived as a burden, almost participants internalized it as their own strengths such as responsibility or independency. Secondly, the friends were very important parts of lives of participants who could be playing with each other and sharing their stories without any judgements. Moreover, this comforting relationship was based on the sense of kinship. Thirdly, other relationships besides family and friends such as relationships with mentors, teachers, relatives and the scholarship foundation also took important roles. Although they were not physically or psychologically close to them, they created another safety net. Finally, the positive relationships with significant others developed the personal characteristics such as optimism, responsibility and independence.
