Abstract
This study concerns the crucial research question of how schools can help students from disadvantaged backgrounds successfully engage in schools in spite of their various forms of adversity they face. First, this study examines the characteristics of school adaptation among disadvantaged but engaged students academically and socially in high school. Second, considering these characteristics, the authors asked disadvantaged students what efforts could be further made by schools and teachers in order for them to thrive despite the adversity in their lives. Interviews were conducted with 21 students from three high schools to identify the major factors contributing to these students’ engagement and how these students overcome their impoverished backgrounds. As a result, the qualitative data firstly shows that poor but engaged students are clearly divided into two categories: an actively engaged group and a compliant group respectively. Secondly, interviewed students tended to perceive their teachers as the best source of support for their needs. Thirdly, the study’s findings suggest that schools need to play a role in providing a variety of educational experiences and activities for less active students in order to foster their growth. Fourthly, the authors suggest ways for teachers to create a motivational school culture in which disadvantaged students can be encouraged to participate more. Lastly, the authors suggest that education for enhancing active citizenship should be emphasized in a way that impoverished youths can overcome their difficulties.
