저소득 청소년의 학습지원 멘토링 참여 과정에 대한 질적 연구

본 연구에서는 학습지원 멘토링 프로그램에 참여한 저소득가정 청소년들의 경험과정의 심층적 의미를 밝히고, 아울러 이러한 경험과정에 대한 근거자료를 기반으로 체계적인 유형화를 시도하였다. 이를 위해 멘토링 프로그램에 참여한 저소득가정 청소년 19사례를 심층면접하였으며, Strauss와 Corbin(2000)의 근거이론접근방법을 활용하여 과정과 결과를 도출하였다. 분석 결과 저소득 청소년들의 학습지원 멘토링에서 학업은 단순히 관계를 경험하기 위한 매개이며 보다 핵심적인 상호작용은 관계 자체였음이 드러났다. 초기 참여는 교사 등의 권유로 인한 외적 동기로 참여하는 경우도 있었지만 자발적인 내적 동기에 기반하여 스스로 선택한 경우도 있었다. 이후의 관계 과정에서는 개인적인 배경 특성과 목표 의식이 멘토링 프로그램에 대한 매력 또는 실망 요인들과 연계되어 다양한 경험으로 이어지게 되는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 관계에 대한 애착과 매력이 상승되는 경우 멘토와의 일대일 관계뿐 아니라 다른 멘티들과의 다양한 관계 속에서 적극적으로 지지망을 형성하는 양상을 보이는 반면에 멘토링 관계 자체에 ‘실망’ 을 느낀 경우 ‘관계 자체를 회피하는 경우도 발견되었다. 이러한 과정과 결과 요인들을 자료에 기반하여 총체적으로 분석한 결과 학습 지원 멘토링 참여 유형은 획기적 성공형, 점진적 발전형, 학업지향적 변화형, 변화 거부형으로 나타났다.
Abstract
The popularity of mentoring programs for adolescents in poverty is on the rise, but little attention has been paid to the process of mentoring relationships. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 19 mentees. They were analyzed using a grounded theory approach based in Strauss and Corbin(2000). The central phenomenon of this study was to examine the way emotional relationshipsbetween a mentor and a mentee in a tutoring process are experienced. Our findings showed that the main types of this mentoring experience were ‘Dramatic success’, ‘Gradual progress’, ‘Achievement oriented change’ and ‘Resistance to change’. In particular, voluntary motivation, personal goals, psychosocial barriers and degrees of attraction in terms of the program were critical factors to understand the experience of a mentoring process. Implications for intervention and policy were also discussed, based on these findings.
