Abstract
This study aimed to explore the emotional branching point experienced by youth transitioning out of foster care during the transition to independence. The term “emotional branching point” refers to a juncture at which individuals may experience diverse emotions depending on their prior experiences. Among the various emotions experienced during the transition, such moments are the points when high-intensity emotions are experienced, which can affect the direction of subsequent decision-making. To address this objective, Focus Group Interviews (FGIs) were conducted with 14 youths from three different care systems (4 in residential care facilities, 5 in foster care, 5 in group home). The collected data were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research (CQR) method. To ensure the validity of the analysis, three coders and one advisor participated in the process. The analysis yielded four domains and twelve categories. The four domains were: ‘aging out of care’, ‘social interaction’, ‘realization of one’s direction’, and ‘perception of economic and environmental resources’. Domain 1 consisted of two categories: ‘just before transitioning out of care’ and ‘right after transitioning out of care’. Domain 2 included the category ‘goal attainment’. Domain 3 comprised seven categories: ‘friends and significant others’, ‘community of youth transitioning out of foster care’, ‘counselor’, ‘relatives’, ‘social media’, and ‘religious community’, and ‘social stigma’. Lastly, Domain 4 included the categories ‘institutional support’ and ‘economic constraints’. Based on these findings, the study examined notable emotional branching points during the transition to independence of youth transitioning out of foster care, and differences by emotional experiences and care systems were examined. Practical implications for policy and counseling interventions to support the emotional and psychological independence of youth transitioning out of foster care were discussed. In addition, the study’s contributions, limitations and suggestions for future research were presented.
