Abstract
This study aimed to explore the interaction between personal traits and relational characteristics with supervisors that may hinder the supervision outcomes of novice counselors. Specifically, it examined the moderated mediation effect of the supervisory relationship (conceptualized as interpersonal impact messages) on the association between pathological narcissism vulnerability and supervision satisfaction, mediated by supervision self-disclosure. A total of 484 novice counselors with less than four years of counseling experience participated in the measurement of Pathological Narcissism Inventory, Supervisory Disclosure Scale, Impact Messages Inventory-Circumplex (IMI-C), and Supervisory Satisfaction Questionnaire. Using SPSS 25.0 and PROCESS Macro, mediation, moderation, and moderated mediation analyses were conducted. The results indicated: First, supervision self-disclosure fully mediated the relationship between pathological narcissism vulnerability and supervision satisfaction. Second, the supervisory relationship significantly moderated the relationship between pathological narcissism vulnerability and supervision self-disclosure. Third, the moderated mediation effect of the supervisory relationship was significant specifically for the affiliate dimention of IMI-C, while a conditional effect was found in the control dimension. These findings highlight the importance of considering both intrapersonal vulnerability and interpersonal dynamics in understanding novice counselors’ supervision experiences.
