Abstract
This study aimed to examine the influence of unconditional self-acceptance on perfectionistic self-presentation and supervisee disclosure in a supervision environment as supervisees, as well as the moderating effect of counselor development level. An online survey was conducted with 203 counselors in South Korea who had at least a master's degree in counseling-related fields and had received supervision from the same supervisor at least three times within the past year, and the levels of perfectionistic self-presentation, unconditional self-acceptance and supervisee self-disclosure were examined. The results are as follows; perfectionistic self-presentation had a negative effect on unconditional self-acceptance and unconditional self-acceptance had a positive effect on the supervisee disclosure. Unconditional self-acceptance showed a mediating effect between perfectionistic self-presentation and supervisee disclosure. The influence of unconditional self-acceptance on supervisee disclosure was moderated by counselor developmental level, i.e., counselor certification. This study suggested the importance of counselors cultivating an attitude of unconditional self-acceptance by confirming the mediating effect of unconditional self-acceptance in the process of counselors’ perfectionistic self-presentation tendency affecting supervisee self-disclosure in a supervision environment. And also it was suggested that future supervision research should consider counselors’ development levels by dividing it into the possession of counselor certification and verifying the mediating effect.
