Abstract
Spinoza's principle of imitation of affects has recently drawn attention as it shows that individuals can unite each other by merely pursuing their own interests and thereby sugestes an ehtical perspective that goes beyond the dichotomy of egoism and altruism. Furthermore, Matheron even interprets it as a "global conatus of the human community." However, does this principle not suggest then at the same time the natural harmony among individuals that Spinoza refuses as imaginary? Moreover, does this not appeal to‘humanity’as a general concept that Spinoza would also reject as a nominalist? To answer this question, I show, first, that also rejects as imaginary? I show three things. First, the principle of imitation is the basis of natural agreement among human-beings, but it also makes it impossible for this agreement continuously sustained. This is because, secondly, when an individual imitates other’s affects, the individual’s own conatus still persists and even tends to expand itself through the imitation. Third, the imitation principle can be considered to be a global conatus of the human community though, on the condition that conatus is understood to be complex so as not to rule out internal differences and conflicts.
