Abstract

The main subject of this paper is the definition of Conscientia in Spinoza's philosophy. The definition of this concept suggested by Curley is idea ideae, which has been considered wrong by many researchers by whom it is believed that this definition would reduce Conscientia to a simple cognition lacking in degree of intensity. However, self-consciousness of mind, that is, idea of idea involves dynamic relation among ideas consisting the mind and its conatus. The basis of this argument is as follows. First, in TIE idea ideae is described from the standpoint of coherence theory which deals with relation of ideas. Secondly, in Ethics II Prop. 23. the possibility of self-consciousness is derived from the relation between whole and part. Finally, in the definition of affect (Ethics III) a cause of consciousness is in metastable state of variable affects. In this sense, the self-consciousness defined as idea ideae is the perception of the ideas that make up the individual mind, and of the activities that make the ideas 'mine'.
