레비나스의 향유 이론은 우리가 감성에 그것의 이론적인 기능을 넘어 새로운 의미를 부여할 수 있게 한다. 레비나스에게 향유는 감성이 사유에 의존하지 않고서도 획득하는 의미이다. 그런 점에서, 감성은 자기-충족적이다. 이러한 감성의 개념은 레비나스가 형이상학적 초월의 가능성을 주장하는데 어떤 기여를 하는가. 첫째로 향유의 개념은 이론에 의존하지 않고서도 동일자가 자신의 동일성을 수립할 수 있음을 주장할 수 있게 해주며, 이를 통해 이론적 인식을 통해서는 불가능한 타자와의 인격적 관계가 동일자에게 논리적으로 가능함을 보여준다. 둘째로, 향유는 사유 없는 의식의 단계에서 출발해, 타인의 현전으로 인한 사유의 발생론을 구성할 수 있게 해준다. 사유의 발생론은 오직 사유를 일차적인 것으로 간주하지 않는 철학에만 가능하다. 향유 이론은 감성을 사유에 선행하는 것으로 고려함으로써, 어떻게 사유가 타인과의 인격적 관계 속에서 발생하는지를 설명할 수 있게 한다.
Abstract
Levinas’s theory of enjoyment allows us to attribute new meaning to sensibility beyond its theoretical function. For Levinas, enjoyment is the meaning that sensibility acquires without relying on thought. In this respect, sensibility is self-sufficient. How does this concept of sensibility contribute to Levinas’ assertion of the possibility of metaphysical transcendence? First, the concept of enjoyment enables the subject to establish its identity without relying on theoretical constructs. This demonstrates that personal relationships with others, which are unattainable through theoretical cognition alone, are logically possible for an identical subject. Second, enjoyment allows us to construct a theory of the emergence of thought through the presence of others, starting from a stage of consciousness devoid of thought. The emergence of thought is possible only in a philosophical framework that does not regard thinking as primary. By considering sensibility as something that precedes thinking, the theory of enjoyment explains how thinking arises only in personal relationships with others.
