Abstract

This study exmines how contemporary digital technologies shape relationality, a core condition of human existence. Drawing on Jean-Luc Nancy’s concept of sense (le sens) as its theoretical foundation, it treats sense as a key consideration for future technological development and, through this lens, identifies gaps in current digital technologies and outlines directions for their advancement. For Nancy, sense is an ontological element that provides a starting point for thinking relation as such. It is not merely the reception of stimuli; it is the way being opens itself in contact with others and the world—an ontological dimension that lets us feel the event of relation. On this basis, the paper argues that by collecting, analyzing, and reconfiguring data extracted from the conditions of human life, digital technologies tend to delimit or homogenize relational conditions, even as they also enable us, through data, to encounter diverse traces of life—that is, the other’s heterogeneous remainders. It further contends that inquiry into the ontological dimensions of the human is indispensable for technological development, and that to say technology represents human sense is to affirm the possibility of encountering alterity and, through such encounters, to rearticulate human plurality and the relations grounded in it.
