계몽사상과 프랑스혁명– 루소를 중심으로

이 글은 루소의 사상을 중심으로 계몽사상과 프랑스혁명의 관련성을 살펴보려는 것이다. 계몽사상은, 샤르티에의 테제와 달리, 프랑스혁명에 의해 만들어진 것이 아니었다. 계몽사상은 구체제에서부터 미래의 혁명가는 물론이고 일반 대중에게도 커다란 영향을 끼쳤다. 물론 구체제 시기의 계몽사상은 혁명사상이 아니었기에 귀족 같은 혁명의 희생자들도 계몽사상을 수용하고 열광했다. 또한 계몽사상은, 다니엘 모르네의 테제와 달리, 프랑스혁명의 진행에도 커다란 영향을 주었다. 계몽사상가들 가운데 가장 크고 지속적인 영향을 미친 사람은 루소였다. 혁명가들은 루소의 공화주의론, 인민주권론, 직접민주주의론, 덕의 지배론 등을 현실 정치에 접목시키기 위해 노력했다. 가장 적극적인 사람은 로베스피에르였다. 로베스피에르는 루소가 설파한 덕의 공화국을 만들기 위해 노력했다. 로베스피에르는 루소의 이상사회 모델인 스파르타를 프랑스에 재현하려 했는데, 이같은 비현실적인 정책은 공포정치로 나타났다. 열월정변으로 공포정치가 종식되면서 루소의 영향력도 사라졌고, 혁명 초에 주목받았던 몽테스키외의 삼권분립론이 공포정치기에 훼손되었던 ‘자유’를 보호할 수 있는 이념으로 부활했다. 이후 총재정부, 통령정부, 제정기를 거치며, 자유주의자들은 ‘개인의 자유’를 보호하는 방안을 모색했고, 계몽사상도 그러한 차원에서 해석되었다. 루소는 계몽사상가인가? 루소는 동시대의 계몽사상가들과 적대적인 관계를 유지했으며, 그들로부터 부당한 박해를 받고 있다는 피해의식에 시달렸다. 계몽사상가들이 ‘이성’을 우대한 반면 루소는 ‘감성’을 우대했고, 계몽사상가들이 ‘문명’을 추구한 반면 루소는 ‘자연’으로의 회귀를 주장했다. 루소는 후기 계몽사상가 혹은 계몽사상의 이단자로 불리지만, 어쩌면 반계몽사상가로 규정하는 것이 계몽사상과 프랑스혁명의 관련성을 논하는 데 필요할지 모른다는 생각이 든다. 공포정치를 계몽사상의 영향으로 보는 것은 계몽사상 전체를 부정적으로 보게 만들 위험이 있기 때문이다.
Abstract
This article aims at examining the relationship between Enlightenment and the French Revolution focusing on Rousseau's ideas. The Enlightenment, unlike Roger Chartier's theme, was not made by the French Revolution. It has had a huge impact on the general public as well as on the future revolutionaries of the Ancient Regime. Of course, it was not in itself a revolutionary idea, so even the aristocratic victims accepted it. The Enlightenment, unlike Daniel Mornet's theme, also had a huge impact on the progress of the French Revolution. The biggest and most enduring influences of Enlightenment was Rousseau’s ideas. The revolutionaries tried to bring Rousseau's ideas such as the republicanism, the popular sovereignty, the direct democracy and the doctrine of virtue to real politics. The most active was Robespierre. Robespierre tried to make a republic of virtue that Rousseau preached, and to recreate Rousseau's ideal society model, Sparta, in France, but this unrealistic policy turned out to be a “Terror.” After the Terror ended by the Termidor coup d’etat, Rousseau's influence disappeared, and the separation of the powers of Montesquieu, which was noted at the beginning of the revolution, has been revived as an ideology that can protect freedom that has been damaged during the Terror. Afterwards, through the Directoire, the Consulat, and the Napoleonic Empire, liberalists sought to protect ‘individual freedom’ and the Enlightenment was interpreted in this respect. Is Rousseau a Philosophe? Rousseau maintained a hostile relationship with contemporary Philosophes and suffered from the sense of damage that he was unfairly persecuted. While Philosophes favored ‘reason,’ and sought ‘civilization,’, Rousseau favored ‘emotion,' and insisted on returning to ‘natural society.’ Although Rousseau is called the heretic of the Enlightenment or the post-Philosophe, I think perhaps what defines him as an anti-Philosophe may be necessary to discuss clearly the relationship between Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Seeing the Terror as the influence of Enlightenment is inappropriate because there is a risk of making the whole of Enlightenment look negative.
