이 글은 루소와 프랑스 혁명의 연관성에 관한 것이다. 혹자는 루소를 ‘혁명의 원흉’이었다고 하고, 혹자는 루소를 ‘반혁명분자’라고 한다. 그러나 이러한 입장들은 모두 루소를 정치적인 관점에서 본 것이다. 이 논문은 그에 반하여 루소가 인간으로서 혁명에 끼친 영향에 대하여 살펴보고자 한다. 그리하여 <고백>을 비롯한 루소의 저술을 통해 루소가 ‘평민의 시대’ 어떻게 새로운 인간상을 창출했는지를 그려보고자 한다. 루소의 이야기는 한 보잘것없는 ‘평민’이 곧 ‘국민’이 되는 새 시대 인간의 이야기이다. 루소는 온갖 결함에도 불구하고 한 명의 떳떳한 자연적인 인간임을 선언할 수 있었다. 루소의 삶은 나약한 인간의 희로애락 그 자체이면서 동시에 인간의 명예와 덕성을 위한 분투이기도 하였다. 프랑스 사람들은 루소로부터 위안받고 루소로 인하여 고양되었다. 필자는 이렇게 하여 루소는 프랑스 혁명의 ‘마음’이 되었다고 생각한다. 또한 루소는 파리 지성계의 총아가 되었지만, 상류층 흉내내기를 거부하였다. 그는 일생 동안 악보 필사라는 노동을 멈추지 않았다. 루소는 소년기의 허영을 버림으로써, 즉 자기만의 길에서 영혼의 기쁨을 찾았다. 이러한 ‘평민 루소’의 자기 혁명, 필자는 이것이 프랑스 혁명의 ‘계시’와 같은 것이었다고 생각한다.
Abstract
This paper is a study of the relationship between J.-J. Rousseau and the French Revolution. Some say Rousseau is the initiator of the Revolution, and others say Rousseau is a anti-revolutionary conservatist. However, the author suspect that both are politics-oriented viewpoints. In comparison, this paper attempts to clarify the emotional influence of Rousseau on the Revolution. So, it focuses how Rousseau created a natural and virtuous human character for the upcoming common people's era. The author contends Rousseau's life itself was an aspiration for a renewed community of liberty, equality and humanity. Even though Rousseau was a man of defects, he succeeded in demonstrating to be a genuine and pure person. Rousseau renounced Paris' ‘vanity fair’ and maintained his own way of life. Even after Rousseau gained a reputation, he continued to earn his life by handwriting music scores. He was a worker. Hence, Rousseau became a heart of the French Revolution.
