Abstract
During Edo era in Japan, Ulleungdo was called Takeshima [竹島], and Dokdo was called Matsushima [松島]. However, Matsushima was a term temporarily indicating Ulleungdo in 18C~19C. In this period, several names, such as Ulleungdo, Takeshima and Matsushima were confusingly used for Ulleungdo. Kawakami Kenzo explains the background of this phenomenon in his book 「Confusing theory of island names」referring to the title of Ulleungdo and Dokdo in the western map. This is Japan‘s official theory. This thesis relooks into the development, cause and meaning of this phenomenon supported by the first historical record 『Jookdogojeung』 which contains the record and details of the phenomenon. The phenomenon started when people in the Meiji era found a new island via a newly opened route and submitted a letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan suggesting to explore that island. The Minisitry of Foreign Affairs of Japan did not accept people's suggestion because they concluded that this island was Ulleungdo of Joseon Dynasty (Korea) which was called Takeshima in the past. However, some public officials raised issues and said there is a possibility that the island might be Matsushima, an island in Japan and thus further investigation is needed. During the ongoing controversy of whether Takeshima·Matsushima are two different names for the same island or two different names for two different islands, people abandoned the perception that Matsushima = Dokdo. Matsushima is one of the island among the two islands, Takeshima and Matsushima, between Joseon and Japan. Meanwhile, a new concept of Matsushima, namely “our country's Matsushima” appeared combining the name 'Matsushima' from Matsushima = Dokdo with the knowledge coming from Hornet Rocks = Dokdo in the western map. Japan's current perception over Dokdo is based on this new Matsushima. The end.
