Abstract

One of the important grounds for the Japanese government's claim to Dokdo is its recognition in pre-modern era. Kenzo Kawakami, who provided the basis for this logic, noted that Matsushima (= Dokdo), which appears in 『Chōsei Takeshimaki』 and 『Takeshima Zusetsu』, is mentioned as Japanese territory. In response, Young-mi Chung explains that since the 19th century, the island referred to by the name of Matsushima has changed from Dokdo to Ulleungdo in San-in region. According to Chung, Matsushima did not always refer to Dokdo. And this argument is based on her interpretation of 『Chōsei Takeshimaki』, 『Takeshima Zusetsu』 and 『Oki Kokishū』. However, according to this paper, 'Matsushima' in the above historical records always referred to Dokdo. And it was not possible to confirm the case that Ulleungdo is referred to by the name of Matsushima. In other words, 『Chōsei Takeshimaki』 and 『Takeshima Zusetsu』, which describe 'Matsushima' as a Japanese territory, should be regarded as describing Dokdo as a Japanese territory. However, this does not support Japan's sovereignty over Dokdo. In the early modern period, the Edo Shogunate viewed Dokdo as outside of Japan's realm, and the above two historical records, which described Dokdo as within Japan's realm, were only privately published local historic records contrary to the government's official opinion.
